What you can hold us to.

Netra Lab builds open AI for the Khmer language. These are the promises behind every model we release, and the standard to measure us against.

01

Free and open, for good

You won't need an account, an API key, or a credit card to use anything we make. Code, weights, and reports are released under licenses that allow commercial use, changes, and redistribution.

This isn't a trial period. We won't lock the work away later, even if a business reason to do so comes up. Khmer-language tools shouldn't need anyone's permission to build on.

02

Khmer first, not Khmer later

More than 16 million people speak Khmer, yet most AI tools barely understand it. Public training data is thin, test sets barely exist, and most systems treat Khmer as one more language added at the end.

The script itself breaks assumptions built into tools made for the Latin alphabet: consonants stack, vowels attach around them, and words run together without spaces. We start from how Khmer is actually written, and design each model around that.

03

Honest about what works

Every model comes with a written report: how it was trained, what it was measured against, and the test data we used, so you can check the numbers yourself.

We publish the failures alongside the scores. Knowing where a model struggles is more useful to the next person than a headline number, and you shouldn't have to take our word for anything.

04

Runs on the computer you have

We keep models small enough to run on the hardware people in Cambodia actually have. An open model that needs a rented server isn't open in any way that matters, whatever the license says.

05

Built to be built on

Netra Lab is independent. It's run by a single researcher, not a company, and isn't funded by anyone with a stake in the results. That leaves us free to put the work first.

We want a healthier ecosystem for Khmer-language AI, not a moat around our own models. If someone trains something better on top of this work, that's the point.

About the lab

Netra Lab is a small, independent lab developing open-source models and tools for the Khmer language. It’s run by a single researcher, not a company.

Work happens in public on GitHub. Models go to Hugging Face when they’re finished, and each one gets a written report here. Netra-OCR, Netra-NMT, and AkaraAlpha are the results so far. Projects are picked because they unblock something concrete for Khmer-language computing.

The name

នេត្រ

នេត្រ (netra) is the Khmer word for “eye.”

The Netra logotype on its construction grid
29 × 24 construction grid

The logotype draws that word on a 29×24 pixel grid. That grid is not a stylistic flourish — it is how an OCR model reads a page: pixel by pixel, resolving structure out of an array of values.

The name comes from the Cat’s Eye Nebula, chosen for being beautiful, inspiring, and powerful in the way a nebula is, and for resolving into the shape of an eye.

The lab’s secondary imagery is the fishing cat, a small wild cat native to the region with some of the sharpest eyesight of any mammal — and a nod to the “cat” already hiding in Cat’s Eye Nebula.
